A June Garden Odds-And-Ends Round-Up: June 2025

Image
With the month coming to an end, there are a number of things that happened this month that I didn't get around to posting about in my garden diary.  Here, below are a series of photos showing some of the things that are moving, growing, blooming and....showing-off in our garden. The dahlias that I planted earlier this month - and pinched back - are showing some good growth.  Below is one of the Pooh dahlias that is showing top-growth at the pinch-site: I applied a coat of Neem Oil to the Disneyland Roses.  Combination fungicide + pest control: These weird Allium are in bloom. It is called Sicilian Honey Garlic Allium. This Island Breeze hosta is doing just fine in the shade garden.  Planted in 2023 and mostly forgotten about.  It deserves a better, more-high-profile spot in the garden.  I should transplant it this Fall.   So, too, are the Forbidden Fruit Hostas that I planted in the Fall of 2022 .  They're stars, but buried under more comm...

Lemony Lace Elderberry - Foliage and Flowers - May 2025

Image
Pops of chartreuse have been showing up in our backyard shade garden in various ways over the years.  One of the most successful was born out of a whim:  this Lemony Lace Elderberry shrub that I planted in the Fall of 2022 as part of a [Fall Planting] sprint .   The Lemony Lace Elderberry provides late Winter/Early Spring interest with wild-looking purple buds and some deep-red foliage .   This week, it started to bloom.  Below are a couple photos showing how it has filled out this Spring: I have a pair of Eiffel Tower Elderberries on the other side of the backyard that are a little behind this one.

Lemony Lace Elderberry Spring Foliage - April 2025

Image
One of the more interesting early Spring shrubs in our garden is this Lemony Lace Elderberry.  Planted in the Fall of 2022 , it turns out this maroon-and-green lace-like foliage that look like little firework explosions on the limbs.  See below for a few photos of the almost Japanese-Maple-like leaves that sort-of unfurl from center clusters.   Spring bud burst is always a fun time, but right now, this Lemony Lace Elderberry might be the star of the entire show.

Lemony Lace Elderberry Leaf's Out - April 2024

Just a month ago, the Lemony Lace Elderberry Shrub in our backyard was showing-off some neat-looking purple buds that were about to burst open with a mix of foliage and berries on the stems of this shade-tolerant shrub.  Fast forward to today - 30-or-so-days-later and the foliage of light green (lemon-lime color) and light purple is showing on the shrub that is tucked in against our fence.  See below: This Japanese-Maple-look-alike is something that I've grown to really appreciate and I'm planning on tucking in some groundcover in/around the base this year.

Lemony Lace Elderberry Purple Spring Buds - March 2024

I planted a lone Lemony Lace Elderberry (from Proven Winners) late in the season of Fall 2022.  It was bought at the end-of-season sale at the Growing Place and came back for the first time last Spring.  Here's a post showing the purple buds on the shrub in April 2023 .    Last year, I planted another pair of elderberry shrubs - this time they were dark-foliage Eiffel Tower varieties .   The Lemony Lace Elderberry has BRIGHT green foliage that resembles a finely dissected Japanese Maple.  It is also supposed to flower.  This one with big, white blooms that arrive before the foliage.  But, I didn't seen any blooms in the first growing season.  Maybe we will this year?   That's what happened with the treeform Doublefile Viburnum shrubs.  Planted in Spring of 222 and didn't flower that first year.  But, when they came back for their second growing season (2023), they put out a lovely set of large, white blooms . ...

Lemony Lace Elderberry Purple Buds - Spring - April 2023

That photo above shows a new (to me) bud from a shrub that I bought on a whim last fall:  Lemony Lace Elderberry .  And, isn't that the most delightful sign of Spring?  It looks....alien.  Doesn't it?  Purple and lime green, ball and fringe.  All in one package.   I had these protected from rabbits with a chicken-wire cage and that seems to have worked.  See below for the current state of this shrub: This is one to watch, since it is the first full growing season.  Maybe I'll add more of these - via the Morton Arboretum Plant Sale - as I see them there every year.  They work in 'part shade' - which has a lot of value in our garden.

Lemony Lace Elderberry Planted - November 2022

And the time has come...for the post about the very last shrub of the year.  The year of shrubs.  That the 2022 yard and garden headline:  The Year of Shrubs.   My number one priority item on my to-do list was to 'focus on shrubs' by adding a variety of mid-sized shrubs to the backyard .  I started the [garden diary] season with shrubs and the very last planting of the year is going to be about a shrub.  This one is a new (to me) deciduous shrub called Lemony Lace Elderberry. Sambucus racemosa. This one is from Proven Winners . Ever wish our popular Black Lace elderberry came in a sunny bright yellow? We are happy to oblige: Lemony Lace offers finely dissected foliage but in a cheery gold color to really light up your landscape . This North American native produces big clusters of white flowers in early spring before the foliage emerges, then bright yellow leaves take over, edged in red. As the foliage ages, it turns an attractive chartreuse . (Emphasi...
