Silver Dollar Eucalyptus Is Popping Off - August 2026

Image
One of the things that I wanted to try this year was growing some accent or filler plants (for cut flower arrangements) in the vertical planter (Greenstalk) that we keep on the patio.  Last year, I grew some herbs, veggies and Zinnias.  This year, I put that very thing on my 2026 to-do list at #9.  Here's what I wrote : 9. Accents, too. Speaking of adding variety to cut flower arrangements, we can do better job of growing accent plants for foliage. Plan to use the Greenstalk Vertical Garden for these cut flower accent plants this year. Instead of growing vegetables. Do a row of herbs and then load up the vertical garden pockets with accent plants like the Eucalyptus that I grew last year . Well...I didn't end up planting a 'row of herbs', but I did use one layer of the Greenstalk for accent plants.  And, I did use Eucalyptus, in fact.     I started with plugs from The Garden Club.  Eight Silver Dollar Eucalptus plugs.  Six of those went int...

First Didiscus Lacy Blue Bloom - July 2026

Image
Yesterday, I posted a photo of a Phlox Cherry Caramel bloom and talked about how that was the first bloom on one of the non-dahlia cut flowers that I have been trying to grow this year.  Today, I'm posting a photo of my second cut-flower (non-dahlia) that has bloomed: a single Didiscus Lacy Blue .  I ordered a rack of plugs of Didiscus from Garden Club (Farmer Bailey ) that arrived earlier than they should have (my mistake, not theirs) and I ended up first potting-them-up into larger pots and then, eventually planting them in the ground.  All eight plants went into the Island Bed in the front yard .  I wasn't sure how attractive they were going to be to the (dang) rabbits, so I encircled them in some chicken wire cages to protect them from being nibbled/gnawed. This post is going up in July, but these photos are from late June - about two weeks ago.   I had my first bloom open up on one of the Didiscus plants.   They're about the size Silver Dol...

Winter Clean-up: Garden Ghost Artemisia - January 2025

Image
One of the 'wins' from last garden season were the three Garden Ghost Artemisia that I planted in the front yard Island Bed along the driveway .  They quickly filled-in/filled-out, provided a nice pop of white to brighten up the bed and were *very useful* in cut flower arrangements.  I bought them from Roy Diblik's nursery up in Wisconsin (Northwind Perennial Farm) and planted them along with a couple of grasses, some annuals and the Korean Maple tree.   Here's a look at one of the MANY arrangements that I used the Garden Ghost plumes in as filler flowers . The provide a tiny bit of Winter interest, but they also have stems that help protect the crown of the plants by trapping leaf litter around the base of the woody plants.  Below is a look at the current state of these Garden Ghost Artemisias planted right next to the driveway: I've talked about it a few times, but between the early snow-fall and the deliberate adoption (at least a little bit more than normal...
