Estate Sale Find: A Vintage 'Bedazzled' Angel Christmas Ornament

This past weekend, we stopped at an Estate Sale on Saturday morning in Elmhurst and I immediately headed right where I usually go:  the basement.  There I found a bunch of 90's Christmas stuff and then after looking around, I spied a box of older Christmas stuff under the tables on the floor.  Digging through there, I found this beauty of an ornament.

This appears to be a homemade/handmade ornament from who knows when, but it isn't new.  It is based on a styrofoam egg with quite a bit of pined bedazzling going on.  There has to be close to 100 pins of pearl around this thing and someone with a lot of patience put it together.

On the front, there's a little plastic angel playing a violin with a little mirror behind her.  She's surrounded by gold and pearl.

When I picked this thing up, it felt good.  Felt substantial.

I know - based on where this was in the basement and the fact that this was the second day of the Estate Sale - that if I didn't buy this thing, it was destined to the garbage can.  Couldn't let a treasure like this end up there, right?

I gave it a good look.  Picked it up and put it down a few times as I was nosing through the rest of the box.  I did notice that it appears that the Christmas tree on the back is pinned in upside down.  Makes me realize that it was definitely a home-brewed ornament.  A kit of some sort, I'm thinking.



So...I grabbed her and took her upstairs.  I also found a vintage cardboard skeleton down there in the basement, so I brought them both upstairs.

At the checkout table, I asked the lady 'how much' for the ornament and the skeleton.  She said..."You can just *have* the skeleton.  But how about 25 cents for the ornament?"  I put them both down and told her I'd be right back. I hustled out to the van and grabbed a quarter from the little drawer next to the steering wheel.  I ran back in and plunked the quarter down and made the deal.

She's sitting on my desk (well...actually...my sister's desk) now and I'm expecting her to stay there until the day after Christmas when we get the tree for the year.  With our stuff in storage, I'm not sure exactly where our ornaments *are*, so because of that, I know just know that this angel will get a good spot on the tree this year.

Earlier this winter, I wrote about the old Lou Malnati's menu and mentioned that as I was waiting around for my pie to finish up, I spied an old Chicago Tribune article posted on the wall that included the original Lou Malnati's Italian Salad Dressing Recipe.  The Tribune reporter called it "prized".  We were set to host a little pizza party over the weekend, so I figured I'd give it a shot.  Here's the article as seen through my mobile phone's camera. I'm not a wine drinker, so the fact that the recipe called for Burgundy wine didn't strike me as odd.  I went shopping at Angelo Caputos in Addison - a really incredible shopping experience - and when I got to the wine section I found Burgundy wine was carried ONLY in those HUGE jugs.  And they were dirt cheap.  The only issue is that needed just 4 ounces.  We ended up with a whole-lotta-wine that Nat won't drink. A Multimeter - Workshop Addition

My father-in-law gifted me this Sears Craftsman 8-function Multimeter for Christmas and I've just gotten around to unboxing it and finding it's permanent home in my shop.  I wasn't quite sure what to do with a multimeter (or multi-meter as it is sometimes spelled), but Nat's Dad also sent along with CNET piece that explains all that this tool can do .   Here's the list: 1.  Test batteries 2.  Check extension cords 3.  Determine the life of lightbulbs 4.  Identify the 'hot' wire 5.  Find bad switches So...turns out, it wasn't all bird stuff at Christmas this year, right?!?

Tom Thayer's Italian Beef Recipe

TOM’S TAILGATER ITALIAN BEEF COURTESY OF Steve Dahl  and  DAHL.COM Ingredients: One 3 ½ to 4 pound boneless beef chuck pot roast One package of Zesty Italian Salad Dressing and Recipe Mix One 16 oz. jar of hot giardiniera One 16 oz. jar of mild giardiniera One dozen baguettes (French rolls) Directions: In a four-quart Crock-Pot, pour in one bottle of giardiniera. Place the roast on top of the layer of giardiniera. Sprinkle the salad dressing mixture on top of the roast. Add the second bottle of giardiniera to the top of the roast. Cover Crock-Pot and cook on high for 6 to 8 hours. When fork tender, shred the roast in the Crock-Pot and allow it to combine with the other ingredients.
