Tip Your Garbage Man With Beer at Christmas - December 2023

Every year, we've tried to find a way to tip the garbage man (is that what we call him still?) at Christmas.   I've put envelopes taped to the side of the can and done a cash hand-off to the driver, too.  This year, I gave him beer.    I *kinda* know when the truck comes on our block; it is around school-departure time.  So, I was walking in-and-out of the house to peep down the block to see if I could spot him.  Eventually, I heard the unmistakable sound combination of those hydraulics and air brakes that I knew was the garbage man.  

I walked down to the sidewalk and as he approached, I gave him this 12 pack of Modelo.  We exchanged "Merry Christmases" and he went on his way.  


Is this unique?  No, I don't think so.  Is it better than cash?  I'm not sure.  

But, is it something that I'll try to do again next year?  

Yes.  Yes it is.

Lou Malnati's Salad Dressing Recipe as Published in the 60's

Earlier this winter, I wrote about the old Lou Malnati's menu and mentioned that as I was waiting around for my pie to finish up, I spied an old Chicago Tribune article posted on the wall that included the original Lou Malnati's Italian Salad Dressing Recipe.  The Tribune reporter called it "prized".  We were set to host a little pizza party over the weekend, so I figured I'd give it a shot.  Here's the article as seen through my mobile phone's camera. I'm not a wine drinker, so the fact that the recipe called for Burgundy wine didn't strike me as odd.  I went shopping at Angelo Caputos in Addison - a really incredible shopping experience - and when I got to the wine section I found Burgundy wine was carried ONLY in those HUGE jugs.  And they were dirt cheap.  The only issue is that needed just 4 ounces.  We ended up with a whole-lotta-wine that Nat won't drink. Frans Fontaine Hornbeam Planted - Hedgerow Spring 2018

Yesterday, I shared a photo of our eight Frans Fontaine European Hornbeam 2.5" caliper trees that had been delivered .  These trees were a long-time coming and we've been planning, talking and thinking about them for almost a year.  Today, the trees went in!  Here's the guys digging the holes and placing the trees in the holes to check for placement and spacing.  We ended up going with six feet of spread between each one and 30" away from the fence. You can tell from the photo above that they are going into a low spot and that our neighbor's to the north truck and garage are pretty visible (right now) from the top of our property.
