Another Karl Foerster Grass Division - October 2024
The three Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grasses that are in the island bed in between our driveway and our front stairs have been stars since we planted the landscape. They were part of the original planting and have done well in this spot. I've divided these a few times over the years.
The first time was the one closest to the house in Fall of 2021. Did more in May 2022.
This Fall, I've opted to dig up and divide the front two. The first one...in the front I totally removed. I took it over to my Mom's house and divided it into three. Below is a photo showing that Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass totally removed.
I then dug up and divided the 'middle' one and split it in two. Put half back in the middle hole. Half in the front hole. See below for the three back in place:
This gave me a +1 plants (or grass) ON MY PROPERTY via division. And +3 more at my Mom's. #11 on my 2024 to-do was to 'focus on fall planting'.
Add this one to the two divided clumps of Karl Foerster grass from yesterday and I find myself looking at a total of 21 'new plants' for 2024. That feels pretty good.
Here's my math: +2 trees, +2 John Greelee Grasses, +6 Ajuga + 2 Stachys = +12 planted. And...+1 red swtichgrass, +1 mystery grass and now + 2 Autumn Moor Grasses + Carex Montana + 3 Karl Foerster Grasses= +9 by division.
21 total 'new plants' in Fall 2024. And. +3 off-site (My Mom's garden). 24 total.
Fall Planting 2024 List
- A semi-dwaf, mostly upright conifer tree - the Oregon Green Austrian Pine - planted in the front yard along the south property line. #ConifersShouldComeFirst
- The Skylands Spruce - container grown from Conifer Kingdom. Planted in the back of the Island Bed in the front yard. #HideAndReveal
- Two new and one transplanted John Greenlee Moor Grass (Seslaria) in the island bed in front of the Northern Glow Korean Maple.
- Six Ajuga 'Chocolate Chip' groundcover plugs planted in the Island Bed in the front yard.
- While not a 'planting' or 'dividing' project, I extended the front porch beds out a foot-or-so.
- Dividing an existing Red Switchgrass down IB2DWs near the sidewalk. From one grass to two - hoping to rejuvenate the crown of this ornamental grass and get it going a little bit.
- I dug up, divided and transplanted into two clumps a 'mystery' blue-green sesleria/or ornamental grass from the front porch bed down to IB2DWs along the sidewalk.
- Two Stachys 'Hummelo' planted IB2DWs as small quart-sized nursery pot.
- Two Carex Montana divided and transplanted along the southside flagstone path. I hedged and left one intact.
- A pair of Karl Foerster grasses via division. Big clump IB2DWs - close to the Bald Cypress - that I divided into three - placed one back in the original spot and two further down IB2DWs to extend the row of Karl Foerster Grasses along the property line.
- A removed (and transplanted at my mom's house) Karl Foerster Grass along with a divided clump in the island bed between our driveway and front porch.
