Proven Winner Dahlia Tuber Boxes at Home Depot - February 2025

Out in the (enclosed) greenhouse portion of the garden center at our local big box store, things are starting to look like Spring.  The arrival of grass seed in big forty-pound bags along with the cardboard display racks of vegetable and annual flowering seed packets are usually the first things in-stock for the season.

But the past few years, they've been joined by something new:  dahlia tubers sold in color-combination sets.  Last year, I saw Longfield Gardens bringing to market a number of dahlia 'kits' and Proven Winners was running some mixed bulb boxes featuring gladiolas.  and this year Proven Winners is out first with their "Garden Blends" boxes that combine a number of dahlia tubers into an easy-to-plant package.

The Proven Winners site has a page up about bulbs where they share that they've partnered with Garden State Bulbs to supply the summer-flowering tubers.    Here's how they're described:

Are you giddy for gladiolus? Do you adore dahlias? Have we got some news for you! New this year, Proven Winners is excited to partner with Garden State Bulb Company to offer a line of premium flowering bulbs designed to bring lush beauty and vibrant color to your garden. This exclusive line features thoughtfully composed bulb combinations for both spring and fall planting as well as a selection of highly sought-after, yet hard to find, individual varieties. Each collection has been carefully curated to provide home gardeners with the uniqueness, convenience and superior garden performance they have come to expect from Proven Winners.

As part of our commitment to helping gardeners achieve success, each of our new bulb offerings includes clear instructions on when, where and how to plant, as well as the square footage each bulb blend will cover.

What's coming through:  Proven Winners has taken all the guess work out of this for you.  Just trust them and follow these 'easy to use instructions'.   That's great for these big box stores and a perfect gateway drug into dahlias.  Love it.

The various combos at our store were neatly packaged and included some stunning photography on the front of the boxes.  Of course....I was drawn to some specific combinations.  Why?  First...their variety of dahlia (Ball and Pompons, naturally) and second...their height.

The box that is the clear winner this Spring is this four-flower-bulb mix named "Radiant Romance Dahlias" that is being sold for $19.98.  Five bucks per dahlia is pretty, pretty, pretty good.  Now...the one thing here is that these are, indeed, sold in boxes. There's no way to get your eyes on the tubers to understand size and health.  But, if twenty bucks gets you even ONE bouquet like the one that is shown on the cover of this kit, the it is a good value.

I mentioned height as part of why I was drawn to this kit.  It includes one Natal Pompon dahlia tuber, two Burlesca Pompon dahlia tuber and one Wizard of Oz tuber.  All three (see below) are listed as starting at 32" tall.  Dahlias that are 36" or under don't require the same staking as taller ones and are where I will always focus.

What is compelling me to think about getting in my car to GO BACK to the store is that the Burlseca dahlias were on my 2024 'get to know' list and I *ALREADY* ordered some Wizard of Oz Dahlia tubers from Longfield Gardens this past Winter.

Will I pick this kit up? Not sure.  But, if you're in the market for some entry-level dahlia tubers, this is the kit to buy at Home Depot this Spring.
