Macho Monument Movement Update - Downers Grove - January 2026

Image
This week was significant for the Macho Monument Movement here in Downers Grove.  A group of concerned residents showed up the Village Council meeting to discuss the proposed " Public Art Program " and the placement of public art in the first three of what the Village is calling their 'Flexible Amenity Spaces' that are being created in Downtown Downers Grove as part of their recently ratified Guiding DG Streetscapes Comprehensive plan .   Up for discussion this past Tuesday was the idea of proceeding with the Public Art Program under a two-phase approach.  The first phase was tentatively suggested to include the purchase of what the Village Staff called  (page 3) "existing artworks for flexible amenity areas that will be constructed in 2026".   After discussion between the Commissioners, the Mayor, Village Staff and residents - including my high school friend, neighbor and founder of the Macho Monument Movement Kevin Larke - the Village Commissioners ...

Toro Inspiration - Downers Garden Japanese Garden Lantern - January 2022

Image
I was going through some of my draft posts from earlier this Summer and I  noticed a draft post about a Japanese-inspired concrete garden object that I saw in a garden on the border of McCollum park in downers.  I thought I'd bring it up-to-date and publish it here as a marker towards some garden object-inspiration.  Here's what I saw in a garden in Downers Grove below - a short, stout object that looks like a lantern.  They are called a toro .   I've posted about being drawn toward Japanese-inspired gardening and even have a visit to Gotenyama Garden in Tokyo as inspiration where they have a large Toro (or at least that's what I *think* it is).  From that post : I also went to the Chicago Botanic Garden late this Summer to visit with a friend and colleague and while there, we tool'd around the Japanese Garden .  It was really lovely.   Here, below, is a photo I took with my phone as we walked towards the Japanese Garden section from th...

Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary Celebration Pooh Bear and Piglet Statue - November 2021

Image
I thought we'd see a lot of these Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary "Fab 50" statues .  But, due to some unforeseen circumstances, I only took a single photo of *just* one of the golden (EARidescent is what they're calling them, I think) character statues that is inside of the Magic Kingdom. Luckily, it is a guy who's big in our house - Pooh Bear.  And, it is a double feature that has the big guy (Winnie the Pooh) giving a nice cuddle to his pal Piglet.   Guess we'll have to go back before the 50th Anniversary Celebration is over. I know this is a minor thing, but it bothers me that there aren't REALLY 50 statues like this one for the 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney World - the Vacation Kingdom.  There are *ONLY* 36 statues .  A bunch of them are two-fers like this Pooh Bear/Piglet one above.  I know that costs are important, but feels like a little bit of the bean counters winning out.
