Why I Oughta...

One of the perennials in our front yard IB2DWs bed that performs well AND behaves well is Cat's Pajamas Nepeta.  There are three of them tucked into that long, linear bed.  And they put on a nice early Summer blue-flower show.  They're also NOT bullies in the garden.  They don't take over and push others around. That early Summer bloom cycle means that the spent flower heads are here all Summer long.  What to do about it?  Deadhead them.  Or, give them the 'Chelsea Chop'. I grabbed my snips and pruned off all the long stems with flower heads.  There's quite a mass of material after pruning all three: I should have taken a 'before' picture.  Because...all I have is the 'after'.  You can see them below.  Nicely pruned back to little orbs.  The third one is tucked in behind the blue Fescue grasses.

Having done a similar post last year and in 2022, I thought it was a good time to revisit the "State of the Original IB2DWs bed".  That's the original bed in between two driveways.  Here is the post and photos from 2022 .  And, here is the post and photos from last year .  Looking back at 2022 - three years ago - a lot has changed.  Everything was immature, but 'bones' were there.  The All Gold Hakonechloa grasses, the Karl Foerster Grasses in back and a couple of Serendipity Alliums.  All were present. But by 2024, they were joined by other things . Including the (gasp!) Creeping Jenny Groundcover. And other perennials including Cat's Pajamas Nepeta, some Elijah Blue Fescue clumps, a red sedums, a couple of Agastache Blue Fortune , a Prairie Dropseed, some Peonies, a couple of conifers, some boxwoods, a Cardoon and a couple of trees. As part of a larger " Garden Edit " to the "kitchen curved bed" in the backyard, I needed to move a few things OUT to make room for what I'd like to install.  Hence the notion of an 'edit'.    One of those edits is a Cat's Pajamas Nepeta that needs to get out of there.  I moved it here last Fall when I noticed it wasn't thriving in the shade .  Little did I know that I'd move it twice in six months.   The good news is that the Nepeta 'came back' this Spring.  Here, below is what the young plant looked like before I dug it up: Below is a little bit more context - showing the Nepeta vs some of the peonies: A few years ago, I posted about how Nepeta is listed as one of the Disneyland Rose 'companion plants', so it was a natural move to trasnplant it right in that long, foundation bed.  Below, you can see the tiny plant tucked in next to a Summer Beauty Allium:

The last time that I published a "State of the IB2DWs" was in Summer 2022 - just about two years ago . Back then, the bed was just getting established; after being transformed from turf grass to a mulch bed.  Today, it is longer, bigger, more-planted and presents a more full-figured profile to visitors.  I thought it was time to update the garden diary with a new State of IB2DWs.    First, the original part - closer to the garage.    Below are a few photos that show the current state - featuring some Serendipity Alliums, Karl Foerster Grasses, Cat's Pajamas Nepeta, some Elijah Blue Fescue clumps, creeping jenny, sedums, All Gold Hakonechloa grasses, a couple of Agastache Blue Fortune , a Prairie Dropseed, some Peonies, a couple of conifers, some boxwoods, a Cardoon and a couple of trees.  Things are doing well, but the Summer heat hasn't arrived.  

These #FallPlanting posts are getting further-and-further out from reality.  The photos below show lush, green garden.  I'm posting this at the end of November.  This was from way back in early October.  I had a Cat's Pajamas Nepeta planted in the backyard in pretty deep shade.  It wasn't doing well.  So, I dug it out and brought it over to the curved border outside the kitchen window.   The first photo below is the Nepeta peeking out from under a Guacamole Hosta leaf.  The second is the new home by the peonies and Lucky Charm Anemones: This doesn't count in my new/divided plants, right?  It is just a transplant.   I'm posting this in November 2023, but I did this transplanting in mid-October 2023.

I planted a trio of Cat's Pajamas Nepeta (along with some Blue Fescue) out front in the bed IB2DWs this Spring and it was the FIRST Nepeta that I've planted.  One of the features of Nepeta is that it can take a haircut after the first bloom - to both push a second flush of flowers but also to keep the plant neat and tidy.   In the online gardening world, you'll hear people talk about the ' Chelsea Chop ' - where you prune things back in late May to get that second flush.  More here on the Chelsea Chop .   I went ahead and pruned back these three Nepeta.  You can see that in the photo below showing the three pruned and cleaned up along with the pile of plant material that I pruned out laying in the middle of the photo - to show how much I took off these perennials.   From a purely technical perspective, you might be wondering:  Is this a " Chelsea Chop "?  The answer?  Maybe?  But, probably...Not really.  I think the ...
