Marshall Field's Walnut Room Christmas Mugs - Comprehensive Historical List

Just last week, I posted the most recent Marshall Field's Walnut Room Christmas mug that I came across at an antique mall up in Wisconsin.  That made it five in the collection here on the blog.

Here's the list of posts on the topic here on "Why I Oughta...":

1980 - Tree with Bear tall glass.
1981 - Contortionist Santas glass mug.
1983 - Uncle Mistletoe tall glass.
1986 - Greetings from Mistletoe Bear Red outline
2000 - Mr. and Mrs. Santabear Marriage glass mug with multiple colors.

But, you'll note that sometime between 1983 and 1986, Marshall Field's moved from using Uncle Mistletoe to someone called Mistletoe Bear.  And then by 2000, the bear had gotten married and his name changed to Santabear.

That set me down on an eBay rabbit hole to see if I could piece together the full list of mugs.  Here's the fruits of that effort:  The Definitive Guide to Marshall Field's Christmas Mugs.  I have been able to document every year starting in 1980 to today with the missing years: 1982, 1998, 2000, 2011, 2016, 2017.

A few notable trends:

Uncle Mistletoe makes an appearance in 1983, but not after.
1985 featured green printing and a pair of German-like kids.
1986 saw the introduction of Mistletoe Bear.  By 1989, the bear began to go unnamed.
1989 was the last year they used the world "Christmas" on the mugs.
1993 the bear gained a new name:  Santabear.  Which they used thru 2007.
Macy's started branding the mugs in 2006 and ran with Santabear for two years before going to a terribly generic mug.

A listing of the time periods.
1980  to 1985 - Hot Toddy Glasses
1986 to 1989 - the Mistletoe Bear Years and the end of Christmas
1990 - the Centennial year
1991 - 1992 - the unmaned "holiday" bear
1993 - 2007 - The Santabear years
2006 to present - the Macy's Years
2008 to present - the Walnut Room generic Years

  2. Santabear was introduced by Dayton-Hudson in 1985. When they merged with Field’s in 1990, Santabear was used at all three stores and Uncle Mistletoe was retired until Dayton’s and Hudson’s were rebranded as Field’s.

This year’s mug says “Marshall Field & Co.”
