Second Flamed Amadeus Amaryllis Stem - February 2026

Image
Mid-December, this Flamed Amadeus Amaryllis was sending up its first stem and flower .  By early January, it was in bloom .  After the bloom faded, I cut the whole thing back to the bulb.  So far, there has been no strap-y foliage emerge from the bulb.  But, a second stem has shot up.  And is now about a foot-tall.  Below is a look at the Flamed Amadeus bud.  We'll get flowers in a week or so, I suspect: Of the two we grew this year, this Flamed Amadeus Amaryllis is about three-weeks ahead of the Shine Dream.  Looks-wise, I prefer the Shine Dream.  Dare I say it is my favorite Amaryllis I've ever grown ?  But, this Flamed Amadeus is MUCH SHORTER and compact.  That's pretty nice.  The Shine Dream is VERY tall - despite using a little alcohol in the water mix.

Fall Mums Pro-Tip: Wire Them Up To Avoid Flopping and Splaying - October 2025

You bought that big container of mums and put them on your porch.  They look good.  Now, the tough part:  keeping them alive.  And keeping them from flopping wide open and splaying. First the 'keeping them alive' part.  It is pretty easy:  water them.  And, even better...'bottom water' them via a bucket or pan that they can sit-in.  Otherwise, drag your hose over there and keep 'em wet every few days.  If you're like me and you're dragging your hose around to try to eek out the final few dahlia blooms, then just stop at your mums and spray them down. As for the second part:  keeping them from splaying wide open?  That part is pretty easy too:  Wire them up.  Here's a post that I shared all the way back in 2017 that is popular every Fall: ProTip: Tie Up Your Mums .  Every Fall since then, we've done the same thing.  Buy the big set of Mums.  Use some twine or garden wire around the perimeter of the blooms to...

Collarette Dahlia Pooh In Bud Vase - September 2025

Image
Because I've only included these red and yellow Collarette Dahlias (Variety is named Pooh, of course), in monoculture arrangements, I've mostly put them in other glasses, vases, jars that have one-inch-or-larger necks.   Because I had it out, I decided to stuff a bunch of Pooh Dahlia stems into a Bud vase.  It was very tight, but I like the way they are pulled together.   Pooh Collarette Dahlia
