Soapstone Stone Landing - Wood-Fired Pizza Oven Construction - November 2025

Image
Ten days ago, I posted a pizza oven construction update where I talked about the framing that I attached (with concrete anchors) to the block stand and poured hearth .  I used treated lumber to create a ledge and added tile-backer board to support the countertop.  That was in-preparation of the counter being installed.  Recently, the new soapstone counter (or landing) was installed.  A few photos showing the finished stone slab are below.  The soapstone extends beyond the edge of the oven enclosure and will still be 'proud' when the brick is attached.

Soon It Will Be Dahlia Tuber Time - November 2025

Image
Last week, I received an email from Longfield Gardens with this subject line: Get Ready...Dahlia Pre-Orders Coming Soon! There's nothing quite like FOMO to make a dahlia gardener snap-to.  I haven't even dug out the tubers from our garden this season and we're already talking about pre-orders for next year.  Eek.  I need a plan. Some people have Black Friday.  Others live for 'Cyber Monday'.  But, then...there are dahlia growers who read this email (pasted below) and think:  Here we go. Where do we start?  I think the first place is to think about what worked and what didn't this year. What worked?  Melina Fluer.  Wizard of Oz.  Ivanetti.  Pooh.   What was 'mid' (as the kids say)?  Mystery Fox.  Some Melina Fleurs.    The Pablo Gallery border dahlias (slugs!) What didn't work?  Sweet Nathalie. Also...I need to think about how much MORE room I have for dahlias.  I figure...I'll always 'make roo...

First Dahlia Tubers Dug And Curing - Ahead of Winter Storage - November 2025

Image
I grew a Melina Fleur dahlia at my Mom's house in a container.  Or...well....she grew it.  It was one of the bulbs that I overwintered last year that I started in a one-gallon nursery container.  She transplanted it into a large pot and grew some cut flowers all season long.   It wasn't protected from the frost, so the foliage died back earlier in November.  When I was over there watching a recent Bears game, I dug the tubers out and brought them home.   My plan is to dig the tubers, let them cure for a couple of days and then...wrap them in Saran Wrap.   Below is a peek at the tubers that came out of her container.  One tuber went into the pot this year.  And, I was able to pull-apart three distinct tubers that (I think??) all appear to be viable (have eyes) on them.  Two are pretty large, one is smaller.  I bought some labels (this year!) and wrapped them around the stems of the tubers.   I'll leave these ...

Three Blossom Peacock Amaryllis Bulbs Planted For Christmas Blooms - November 2025

Image
November is the time when the outdoor garden gets put to bed for the year, but it is also the time when I turn to some indoor (seasonal) gardening.  That usually starts with Amaryllis bulbs - or as we call them around here:  Christmas flowers.   Last month, I posted some photos and details of the $10 Amaryllis bulbs that my local Orange Big Box store was carrying and talked about how their smaller (than what we normally buy) size would work well for a 'multiple' bulb container. My mom has this faux birch cache pot that seemed like a perfect vessel for three smaller Christmas flowers.   I figured I'd fill it up and we can deliver it back to her for the season. At the story, I picked-up and handled dozens of bulbs until I could find three that 'felt good' to me.  That meant that they were firm, green, had *some* roots and the foliage wasn't all strap-y and exposed already.  I've had bad luck with Big Box Amaryllis bulbs before (I've also had duds f...

Purple Smokebush Tree - Two Years Later - Fall Colors - November 2025

Image
The 'fall colors' don't stop with the reds and oranges and yellows.  Down IB2DWs (extended) near the sidewalk is the (now) two-year-old ( Planted in October 2023 ) Purple Smokebush/Smoke Tree.  This tree (shrub?) has been no-fuss since it went in the ground and has put on some size in the two growing seasons.  I've watered it in a limited way, but the neighbor's sprinkler system likely saturates the ground where the Smoke Bush's roots draw from around the canopy.   Did we get any of those ' smoke-like airy seed clusters ' to emerge on the tips of this tree this season? No. No...we did not.   But, we *are* getting a small purple, pink and maroon 'fall show' as the foliage changes color.  Below, is a look at the current state of the leaves on this tree that is down by our sidewalk: When I planted this , I wanted to add some texture and color contrast to the 'expanded' conifer garden that I was planting along the property line IB2DWs.  I h...

New Amaryllis Bulbs - Shine Dream and Flamed Amadeus - November 2025

Image
At the Wannemaker's Annual Christmas Open House, we met the Big Guy (of course), ate some grilled foods from Casey's and...came away with two big amaryllis bulbs.  As is the tradition.  Each of my two youngest kids picked out a bulb that there plant as we try (*fingers crossed*) to get some Christmas flowers.  I previously posted some details of amaryllis bulbs at Home Depot this season .  Last year, I planted two bulbs from Wannemakers:  A Double Dream .  And an Exotic Star .   The Exotic Star bloomed right around the New Year .  But, the Double Dream was a total dud.  It sent up a bud tip in March (yes...March!), but then it withered and died.   In 2023, we planted three .  One of them was a dud - Samba. But, the La Paz went off quickly. With a Rilona Amaryllis coming in right in-between.  Blooming in January .   This year, we are trying two new (to us) bulbs.  Here are the two tags of the bulbs they...

Northern Red Oak Fall Colors - Orange Foliage - November 2025

Image
It seems like we're getting BOTH a slightly delayed Fall color cycle and it is also amp'd-up on some things a bit more this season, too.  One of them that's 'amp'd-up' is the tree swing tree:  A mature Northern Red Oak tree.  This large tree has historically behaved in different ways each season.  Some years, it holds its leaves through the Winter, while other years it drops everything quickly.  But, most seasons we get a very limited 'fall show' with muted browns. This year, things are a little different.  The tree is bright like a flame with orange leaves blazing against the blue sky.  See the photo below: A few things to note in this photo: 1. There are still a bunch of green trees around. 2. There are also some yellow trees (The Black Walnut trees). 3. The other large mature Red Oak tree is way more green than this one. Compare the state of this tree (orange leaves) to the same tree on November 9th, 2021 (4 years ago) when it was full of GREEN l...

Getting To Know: North Wind Korean Maple - November 2025

Image
Earlier last week, I posted a close-up of the fall colors on the Arctic Jade Korean Maple and talked about how I'm (already) thinking about another Korean Maple tree from the Jack Frost collection.   I bought the Arctic Jade from The Growing Place and when I was there earlier this year, I saw another Korean Maple from the Jack Frost Collection:  North Wind Korean Maple.  Here, below, is a photo of the sign from The Growing Place.  Here's the description from Iseli Nursery's website : The North Wind® maple is our flagship of the hardy Jack Frost® maple collection. It has been unscathed in Midwest field testing, surviving temperatures of -30°F. The palmate leaves emerge red in spring and change to green by midsummer. Showy pink samaras standout against the green summer foliage. When other fall color has faded in northern landscapes, North Wind® continues the show with dramatic tones of orange and scarlet. Negative thirty degrees is great.  It emerges red and...

Black Tupelo Tree (Blackgum) Turning Red In Fall - November 2025

Image
I planted a native Black Tupelo (Blackgum) tree in our parkway earlier this growing season as a replacement for the London Planetree that didn't make it down there.  They both were small caliper trees, but I paid *a little bit more* attention to the Black Tupelo in terms of watering this season.  Despite some die-back, the tree seems to have made it through the growing season with foliage on the limbs.   And that foliage is what is starting to 'show off' with its Fall colors.  Turning a bright red.  Here, below, is a look at the fall show from the leaves turning red: Back in the 'Getting to Know' post on the Black Tupelo , I included this description:   "One of the most spectacular and reliable fall coloring trees, turning brilliant shades of red and orange..."   Seems that characteristic of the tree (reliably turning fall colors) is turning out to be true - even in this small, young (< 1" caliper) tree.   Late this Winter,...

Framing Pizza Oven Landing Support - November 2025

Image
A couple weeks back, I posted an update on the pizza oven that showed the treated lumber framing that I attached to the front of the block stand (I used Tapcon concrete anchors) as part of the prep work for the installation of the final counter that serves as the 'landing' of the oven.   In that post, I showed *most* of the framing installed, but since then, the countertop installer came by to measure the space.  When he was here, we talked about extending the front of the framing to provide a bit more support.  And, he suggested that I put down a layer of tile-backer board across the top.  The countertop installer suggested that he would use thinset mortar to affix the countertop in-place and the tile-backer board would provide the right base. As I was looking at the framing that I had already installed, I noticed that the left 'leg' was slightly off (in terms of the correct position), so before I finished up the horizontal surface prep, I moved that leg over....

Northern Glow Hybrid Maple Fall Colors - November 2025

Image
Yesterday, I posted a photo of the 'fall colors' that the dwarf Spring Grove Ginkgo tree (planted in our front yard island bed) and talked about how it was one-of-two anchors in that bed.  The other one being a Northern Glow Korean Maple tree.  The photo at the top of this post shows the current state of that Northern Glow hybrid Maple tree.  Like the Arctic Jade Korean Maple tree in our backyard, this deeply-cut Maple tree has darker centers on the Fall foliage.  This one is further 'behind' the Arctic Jade in terms of changing colors.   This Northern Glow Korean Maple went in the ground in Summer 2024, so this is the second Fall.

Spring Grove Ginkgo Dwarf Tree Fall Color - November 2025

Image
In the Summer of 2024, I planted a small, dwarf Spring Grove Ginkgo tree in the island bed in our front yard .  This tree was one of two anchors (other being the Northern Glow Korean Maple tree) in that (then) small bed.  This year, I planted a large drift of coleus that (somewhat) obscured the Ginkgo, but now that the frost has killed the coleus, the Spring Grove Ginkgo is showing off.   Ginkgos do a good job of turning bright yellow followed by a VERY RAPID (almost 'all at once') leaf drop.   Here, below, is a look at the Spring Grove Ginkgo with its curled foliage showing yellow/gold tips and green centers.   Something to think about this Fall:  Expand this island bed and think about how to best plant-up the bed next year.  There were some wins here (Coleus and hopefully the Ajuga) and some losers (Medusa Allium) and some misses (Didn't plant Autumn Moor Grasses).

Arctic Jade Korean Maple Foliage - Fall Reds and Oranges - November 2025

Image
Red centers with orange tips on the deeply cut leaves on our Arctic Jade Korean Maple tree continue to be the star of the "Fall Show" in our backyard.  I posted a photo of this tree showing its colors a few days ago and the tree continues to color-up.  Here, below, is a look at some of the colors on the leaves right now: Previously, I posted about this tree and included a description that compared the Arctic Jade Korean Maple to the Full Moon Autumn Maple - which is a Japanese Maple.  Acer shirasawnum.  One that I've long admired and a big part of why I bought the Arctic Jade.  Not to mention the fact that it is a Korean Maple that is a more cold tolerant than the Acer shirasawnum .   I planted this tree in the front of a curved bed in our backyard as a (sort-of) replacement for the Flowering Japanese Cherry Tree that died last year.  It went in the ground in June , so this is our first Fall with the tree.   Previously, I planted a sm...

Illini Football Beats Rutgers - November 2025

Image
No Big Noon Kickoff or Barstool show , so we didn't leave as early as we have in the past for the 11 am kickoff.  And, with Dad's Day being celebrated on campus this weekend, we hit a bunch of traffic on I-57 heading down.  That came as a surprise, but we still arrived in time to get to the Legacy Lounge for some drinks and food and into our seats to see some of the warmup.   For the early-season games, we've sat in the full sun and wished we were sitting further back under the canopy of the upper deck to get some relief in the shade.  This week, it was cold and we were sitting on the east side under the canopy and wishing we were out there in the full sun.   Having an 'easy win' over the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers (the Birthplace of College Football, they'll have you know) was exactly what this Illini fan's heart needed.    Here's our pre-game view at Gies Memorial Stadium: With this sixth win, the Illini are 'bowl eligible'.  Funny how...

This Year's Jack-o-Lanterns - November 2025

Image
We've officially transitioned from the 'kids-draw-on-pumpkins-but-I-make-the-cuts' to 'On-their-own' phase of pumpkin carving.  Three kids, three different Jack-o-lanterns.  They're all great in their own unique ways.  The easy one to guess is the KotBT's pumpkin, right?  The other two are easy to guess - if you know the girls.   I've posted about pumpkin carving for years on the blog including this Mickey the Mouse carving that Nat did back in 2012 .  13 years ago.   We used to be pretty creative (If I do say so, myself) including these Owl pumpkins from 2013 .

Jeff Tweedy At The Salt Shed - November 2025

Image
There were plural Tweedys on the stage on Saturday night at the Salt Shed.  You could tell right away when they walked on the stage based on how they looked.  The hair.  And the way that Jeff Tweedy was smiling.  He was happy to be playing with his kids and other people (that he said) he knew since they were "little".  There he was - seemingly looking healthy - playing from his new thirty-song (yes...30 songs) album Twilight Override with a band backing him featuring two pairs of siblings (one of them being his two sons - playing drums and keyboards).  I don't know what anyone else was expecting, but (for me), the highlight of the night was the free water and cups from the hosts at the Salt Shed.  I had never been there before, but was really impressed with the place.  It is a big cavern and they have done a really nice job creating a unique venue.  We parked up the block about 10 minute walk (we went for pizza prior to the show and left the ...

Arctic Jade Korean Maple Fall Colors - November 2025

Image
Earlier this Summer, I planted our second Korean Maple tree - an Arctic Jade - in our backyard.  I wrote a little bit about this tree in June and talked about the fall colors.  In that post , I included this (partial) description: " In autumn, the foliage is an impressive canvas for the dazzling fusion of orange and red tones. "  So, with Autumn here, how is the tree shaping up?  Here, below is a photo showing the current state of this dwarf tree: I spy orange, red, yellow and greens.  Dazzling?  I'd say so.  Look at those red centers with orange edges on the foliage.  Also...a note about the Hakonechloa Forest Grasses on the right side of his photo above.  I'd say they look pretty, pretty, pretty good together, don't they?
