Under the Sea Red Coral Coleus As Bedding Plant - Back Patio Bed - June 2025

Number 6 on my 2025 to-do list this year was to 'use more coleus as bedding plants'.  That idea was based on the success that I had with some Inferno coleus that I planted in our front yard island bed last season.    Earlier this year, I planted a dozen Crimson Gold Versa coleus (full sun coleus) in the front island bed.  And, a trio of Inferno Coleus that I bought at The Growing Place in the backyard corner patio bed.  I figured I'd try at least one more this year as a bedding plant.  So....when I've been on the look-out for a unique one to try.

I came across a placed called Patyk's Farm up near Richmond.  It is on the south side of Route 173, a few miles out of Richmond as you head towards Woodstock.  It is a medium-sized family farm operation with four-or-five greenhouses and TONS of plants.  I arrived right when they were closing, so I didn't spend too much time there.

I did, however, find this unique coleus and bought one (ugh...I know...never buy one, Jake).

It is called a Coleus Under the See Red Coral and it looks like nothing I've ever seen in a coleus.

Here's how it is described: "Petite, spoon-shaped leaves with tones of red and fuchsia. Very cute and popular member of the Under the Sea Coleus."

Here's the quart container that I bought of Under the Sea Coleus Red Coral:

I put it in the bed near the the Inferno coleus.  This bed was part of the 'lazy bed extensions' that I did last Fall.  I'm glad that I pushed these out and I'm filing them up this year.  (Note to self...expand this bed even more this Fall...).  Below is the coleus - and you can see that it has *already* put on some new growth, so it appears to like it here.

Below is a peek at the previously-planted Inferno coleus in front of the new Under the Sea coleus.  Also...note how two of the Inferno are different color than the third.  Could one (or two) of these have been mis-marked?

Below is the plant tag for this unique coleus with 'spoon-shaped foliage':

With (now) sixteen (16) coleus in the ground as bedding plants, I'd say that we're hitting that item on the list - in terms of being 'complete', right?
