15 More Dahlias Planted - 32 Total (So Far) - June 2026

I started planting dahlias in May and posted the first seventeen a few days ago.  In that post, I showed the locations and talked about how most of them (14 of the 17) were new to me varieties with just three legacy dahlias (Melina Fleur, Ivanetti and Sweet Nathalie).  

Today, I'm showing the next round of dahlias that went in the ground.  These were planted in the second to last week of May - the day after the first seventeen went in. I planted them in three spots:  Pizza Oven West, IB2DWs and the back of the Island Bed.  Here's the updated planting map with the latest 15 tubers in blue.


Here is a breakdown of what is planted in each of the three beds:

Pizza Oven West
18.  Burlesca
19.  St. Martin
20.  Wizard of Oz
21.  Rip City
22.  Creme de Casis
23.  Melina Fleur

Below is a look at these six.  The Melina Fleur is still in the container.  But, all of them are protected by rabbit cages.  For now.  


IB2DWs
24.  Tsuki Yori No Shisha
25.  Peaches N' Cream
26.  Kelsey Annie Joy
27.  Peaches N' Cream
28.  Great Silence
29.  Jowie Winnie

These six are planted in two clusters.  One of two and one of four.  The first two are closer to the Bald Cypress.  The other four are down near the sidewalk.  


Island Bed
30.  Ivanetti
31.  Burlesca
32.  Melina Fleur

These last three are in the island bed.  One of them is currently protected by a trash can from the Dollar Tree (more on that later), but the other two are in rabbit cages.


Of these fifteen (15), there are just three legacy dahlias (Melina Fluer x2 , Ivanetti and Wizard of Oz).  That means of the 32, just seven are legacy (Melina Fluer x 3, Ivanetti x 2, Sweet Nathalie and Wizard of Oz) and 25 are trialing or new to me.  

I have more to get in the ground, but I'm going to wait a beat to see what gets scooped up by my family and friends before planting in the final spots.  Because...I'm running out of room.  

I've hit my 2026 goal of "going big on dahlias".  Last year, I planted 23 total with 6 of them being border dahlias, so 17 cut flower tubers.  I'm +15 in 2026 (so far).

The time has come for the backyard Fall lawn project.  What I thought was going to be a total renovation - killing everything and seeding from scratch - has turned into a combination of patch seeding and total overseeding in a couple of ways.  Once I was able to positively identify that I had an infestation of Nimblewill (a warm-season bent grass), I opted for a selective treatment called Tenacity.  After a couple of applications, the spray began to work and has turned the tips of the Nimblewill white as it begins to kill it off .  The killing and eradication of the Nimblewill isn't going to be done in this one season, but rather will be a multi-year program.  But, with the application of Tenacity (while the Nimblewill is/was growing ), I think I've begun to defeat it.  And allow for the application of a new batch of grass seed that will (I hope) take off and begin to grow in the final six or so weeks of the season.   The backyard is a case study...

New Succulent - Key Lime Pie - March 2021

In our indoor container garden collection, we have a few succulents that we've picked up over the years including the Burro's Tail that I bought home from the office and (just last week) began the process of planting some cuttings.   Upstairs, in the sunniest spot, we also have a container of Firesticks Cactus that I planted in 2018 .  I managed to drag that Firesticks outside last Summer and then back in before Fall and it seems to have thrived the past year or two.  It is pretty big and likely in need of a new container.  But, more on that succulent in a separate post. This is about a new (to us) succulent that I picked up recently at Home Depot.  It was a $3.98 2.5" plastic nursery pot that has these plump, crinkle-ended leaves/lobes.  For now, I decided to just leave the Key Lime Pie succulent in the plastic nursery pot and stuck it inside a larger, terra cotta container that doesn't (currently) have a hole punched out of the bottom, but appears t...

Frans Fontaine Hornbeam Trees - Fourth Growing Season Summer Update - August 2021
