Female Bob Dylan Impersonators

(First...a word:  sorry about all the videos lately.  Too many are catching my eye!)  A month or two ago, Nat and I took the babe to see "When in Rome" at the Loma Theatre up in Michigan.  Yes...it was terrible, but it was the only thing that was showing at the time we wanted to go (trying to fit a feature film in between feedings/naps is challenging!).

The high point of the film was a song performed by Adele - "Make You Feel My Love" - a song written by Bob Dylan and included on the Time Out of Mind Album.  I've always liked the song - especially the contrast between the context of the song and Dylan's rough voice work.  It always stood out on a VERY strong album.

Hearing it in the movie got me thinking -  might Bob Dylan end up being a great - maybe the greatest - songwriter for female artists?  His works have such tender moments - but with him singing them - they end up elsewhere.  I've included the Adele version of "Make you Feel My Love" below.  But I've also included a few other covers by females as well.  I might argue that each of them are **better** than his original.  Blasphemy?  Tell me what you think.

    very nice, all of them..as for better than dylan himself well...it's like comparing apples to oranges, dylan is the more unique. these women do a good job though. heard a woman singer do "Tomorrow is a long time" and hated the song then because it was too sweet.

    I wholeheartedly disagree. First these are not even the best covers of these songs. Adele is flat, using only her register, Baez style, no creativity, Neko is null compared to the very funky Bette Middler version, and Sophie Z thinks she is Charlotte Gainsbourg and like Charlotte did for Just Like a woman destroys Most of the time (The Dylan version is outstanding). As far as Mississipi, the 3 chicks do a far better job than Sheryl, but Bob alone can communicate the spirit of the song. For the chicks it is just music, with HIM, the lyrics speak.

    There are good Dylan cover by women, starting with several nice BOTT pieces by miss Corvette, and the 30th anniversary "Released", or Shawn Colvin's "Lonesome" ... These are the good covers - they hang on the depth of the lyrics and don't just add strings and a high pitched tremolo. They speak.

    Nice feedback! Appreciate you sharing your thoughts. I'm - by no means - a Bob Dylan expert. In fact...you probably will frown on me because I like 3 "late" records best - better than earlier music. Modern Times, L&T, and TOOM are my top 3.

    But...I was born in 1978!

Lou Malnati's Salad Dressing Recipe as Published in the 60's

Earlier this winter, I wrote about the old Lou Malnati's menu and mentioned that as I was waiting around for my pie to finish up, I spied an old Chicago Tribune article posted on the wall that included the original Lou Malnati's Italian Salad Dressing Recipe.  The Tribune reporter called it "prized".  We were set to host a little pizza party over the weekend, so I figured I'd give it a shot.  Here's the article as seen through my mobile phone's camera. I'm not a wine drinker, so the fact that the recipe called for Burgundy wine didn't strike me as odd.  I went shopping at Angelo Caputos in Addison - a really incredible shopping experience - and when I got to the wine section I found Burgundy wine was carried ONLY in those HUGE jugs.  And they were dirt cheap.  The only issue is that needed just 4 ounces.  We ended up with a whole-lotta-wine that Nat won't drink. A Multimeter - Workshop Addition

My father-in-law gifted me this Sears Craftsman 8-function Multimeter for Christmas and I've just gotten around to unboxing it and finding it's permanent home in my shop.  I wasn't quite sure what to do with a multimeter (or multi-meter as it is sometimes spelled), but Nat's Dad also sent along with CNET piece that explains all that this tool can do .   Here's the list: 1.  Test batteries 2.  Check extension cords 3.  Determine the life of lightbulbs 4.  Identify the 'hot' wire 5.  Find bad switches So...turns out, it wasn't all bird stuff at Christmas this year, right?!?

Tom Thayer's Italian Beef Recipe

TOM’S TAILGATER ITALIAN BEEF COURTESY OF Steve Dahl  and  DAHL.COM Ingredients: One 3 ½ to 4 pound boneless beef chuck pot roast One package of Zesty Italian Salad Dressing and Recipe Mix One 16 oz. jar of hot giardiniera One 16 oz. jar of mild giardiniera One dozen baguettes (French rolls) Directions: In a four-quart Crock-Pot, pour in one bottle of giardiniera. Place the roast on top of the layer of giardiniera. Sprinkle the salad dressing mixture on top of the roast. Add the second bottle of giardiniera to the top of the roast. Cover Crock-Pot and cook on high for 6 to 8 hours. When fork tender, shred the roast in the Crock-Pot and allow it to combine with the other ingredients.
