First Jowey Winnie Dahlia Bloom - July 2026

All the way back in August of 2024, I posted a "Getting to Know" post about a number of dahlias that I had come across in that growing season that jumped out to me.  Enough, at least, to write that post about.  One of those varieties in that post was Burlesca.  I'm growing those this year.  

And another one was Jowey Winnie.  

I bought two tubers of Jowey Winnie from Longfield Gardens this past Winter and have put them through my normal dahlia tuber program of starting indoors, moving outdoors and planting in the beds.  One of them IB2DWs and one of them in the Pizza Oven West bed.  The one in front was a dud and didn't grow.  The one in the back by the pizza oven is throwing off its first bloom.  

But, is it Jowey Winnie?  Here is the bloom on *my* Jowey Winnie Dahlia before I cut it:

As for why I'm questioning if this is, indeed, a Jowey Winne, let me turn to the seller, Longfield Gardens, and their product page.  Here is a screenshot showing the description and their example photo:

That color description says: "....blend of dusky pink, peach, and mango, with a touch of plum in the center."

Not much peach, pink or mango in the one that I have cut off the plant.  See below for more photos.

Here, below, is an "alleged" Jowey Winnie dahlia next to a Ivanetti Dahlia.  The Ivanetti is more purple, but neither of them are peach, pink and mango, right?

Now, I know that dahlias change colors and alter how the blooms look as the growing season wanes on.  Some colors get darker, some get lighter.  Some blend and change.  That *might* be the case here.  What first blooms as burgundy ball dahlia might end up being more peach?  I'm not sure.  But, I'm suspicious.

I've reached out to Longfield on a couple of other dahlias this growing season and they've been great about responding and in most cases offering to make things right.  I'm going to let another bloom hit and them email them some photos to see what they think about this being the *right* Jowey dahlia.

Frans Fontaine European Columnar Hornbeam Trees Leafing Out - April 2023

Our hedge of Frans Fontaine Columnar Hornbeam trees is waking up for Spring and has begun to leaf-out all over the trees.  The last time that I looked at these trees was earlier this (late) Winter, when all of the trees were still clinging to some of their previous-season's leaves (something called foliar marcescence).   The screening that comes from planting these Frans Fontaine Hornbeams along the property line is starting to come into focus this growing season as the small leaves are opening from their buds.  Below, is a photo showing the current (mid/late April) state in our yard in Northern Illinois (Zone 5b).  And, here below, is a look at the leaf from the Frans Fontaine European Hornbeam (Fastigata).  They are curled and ribbed with a hob-like flower/fruit on the trees It won't be long until they fill-in for the year - check this post to see what these trees look like mid-Summer (July 2022) where they're screening our neighbor's yard. Chartreuse On The Loose Nepeta - Summertime Re-Bloomer - July 2025

Earlier this year, I planted three small quart-sized nursery containers of a new (to me) nepeta named 'Chartreuse on The Loose' .  It is an interesting variety that has a unique color foliage (lime green), habit (trailing) and maintenance needs (it doesn't require deadheading to re-bloom).  Right away, one of the plants was eaten-up by the (dang!) rabbits.  But the other two seemed to do just fine.   Look back at this planting post in early May when the three small plants were just that:  small .  Lots of mulch showing between them.   Today?  They've made a drift with no gaps in between them at all.   See below for the current state of these trailing/spreading catmint perennials: I've mentioned that I need to continue to remind myself to add more of WHAT IS WORKING instead of adding net-new stuff.  But, these are both a reminder that sometimes new things can be great.  But, now that I see them working, I have put them...

Columnar Tree Dreaming - Dakota Pinnacle Birch and Swedish Aspen - Winter 2020

Since the new year, I've posted about a couple of spots that I'm thinking about for trees in 2020.  That started with the five trees that I want to plant in the front yard ( including five new trees ) and a small section between the espalier Linden trees and a Cleveland Pear along the southern fence line.  In both of those pieces, I talked quite a bit about columnar trees.  At this point, you're probably like:  we get it, Jake.  You like columnar form.
